Synopsis: This is a made for TV movie that follows Republican Nominee John McCain’s Presidential campaign in 2008 from picking Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin to his defeat to Barrack Obama. It’s mostly about Sarah Palin though, lol.
Main Cast: Ed Harris, Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson, Ron Livingston, Sarah Paulson, Jamey Sheridan, Peter MacNicol
The Hype: Julianne Moore just won an Emmy for her portrayal of Sarah Palin in this movie, but the cast alone is good enough to give it some major pulling power. TV movie it might be, but there is some buzz around this now on the success at the Emmys.
What I Thought: I liked this a lot. Julianne Moore was really superb as the soccer mom turned politician Sarah Palin and surrounded by the likes of Harris and Harrelson, great performances were bound to come flooding out. The story is engaging, like a feature length episode of The West Wing, but not quite as gritty and once more HBO have served up some great television. It thoroughly deserved the 5 Emmys it won earlier this week and if you are a fan of American politics you might just get into this film. It’s nicely made and looks much more big budget than it probably was. A very nice job all round.
Conclusions: Ok, so it isn’t The West Wing (which I love), but its a very good political drama set around a subject that was close to a lot of people’s hearts in 2008 and I think from what I know of that campaign (which is pretty much what we saw in the news and the aftermath, it’s pretty accurate. Great performances and Emmy success make this a definite watch for fans of political drama.
Smurfin’ The Web Rating: A very good
