The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced today. I have to say that I feel that it is a little underwhelming. Like the Golden Globes and the BAFTAS, it appears to be the same films getting all the same nods. I won’t give you the entire list, but will go through the main ones for you all.
Best Motion Picture – This can be anything from 5 to 10 films and this year there are 9 nominations for the coveted prize: American Hustle, Captain Phillips, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena and 12 Years A Slave. The surprise here is the lack of a nomination for Mandela: The Long Walk To Freedom. I really thought that there would be a full complement of 10 nominations again this year and I think it’s a shame that Saving Mr. Banks isn’t in this list either.
Best Actor In A Lead Role – Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio,Bruce Dern, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthew McConaughey. Nothing for Tom Hanks here despite being in two top movies this time around, and again, no nomination for the Mandela film starring Idris Elba. It certainly seems like it is the snub of the year.
Best Actress In A Lead Role – Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep. I personally think that Emma Thompson deserved a nomination here for her role in Saving Mr. Banks, but it would appear that The Academy overlooked her, then realised they were one person short and just stuck Streep in there once again.
Best Actor In A Supporting Role – Barkhad Abdi, Bradley Cooper, Jonah Hill, Michael Fassbender, Jared Leto. This seems like a good list of actors and its especially pleasing to see Jonah Hill’s name in there again. I think his second nomination as a serious actor should be evidence enough that he is more suited to those kind of roles and that its time to move on from his comedy persona. Also, I think it proves that he does actually have some talent.
Best Actress In A Supporting Role – Jennifer Lawrence, Sally Hawkins, Julia Roberts, Lupita Nyong’o, June Squibb, As yet I cannot comment too much on this list as I have not yet seen any of the films these actresses are representing. More to come in later blogs.
Best Director – Alfonso Cuaron, Steve McQueen, David O. Russell, Martin Scorsese, Alexander Payne
Now, I have my thoughts initially, but I will wait before writing them here until I have watched more of these movies in the coming weeks before the actual awards ceremony on March 2nd. What I will say for now is that I wonder had Nelson Mandela NOT died, would the Idris Elba movie have had some more nominations in the big categories or have the Academy snubbed it simply because it would obviously appear like a sympathy vote if the film was given all the nominations. I think perhaps they have learned from giving Heath Ledger an Oscar for dying. Lets face it, he wasn’t getting it for his role as The Joker had he lived.
More soon, so please check back for some Oscar nominated movie reviews.
