Synopsis: Whilst on a trip to the White House for a job interview, a Capitol policeman has to risk everything to save his daughter and the President of the United States from a group of paramilitary terrorists that have taken over the building.
Main Cast: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Joey King, James Woods, Richard Jenkins
The Hype: In a year that has brought us two movies about the destruction of The White House, the other of course being Olympus Has Fallen, it was interesting to me to see how this one would stack up again its rival. This movie is from the makers of Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 so big budgets are at work here and with them, big expectations.
What I Thought: Actually, I rather quite enjoyed this. I definitely preferred it to Gerard Butler’s film from earlier in the year and White House Down does exactly what it says on the tin. The action is pretty much none stop once it gets started and I would say that this movie reads like an early Die Hard movie, even down to Tatum stripping down to the white vest, lol. So we can see here that it’s clearly one of those movies that copies others. The acting isn’t great, but it’s not supposed to be. Here its all about the action, however, Joey King who plays John Cale’s daughter does turn in a very good emotional performance and I think we may see her more and more as the years go by. It must be a poor year for movie because the gross at the cinema wasn’t that great and this will be one of those movies that makes it into Christmas stockings this year on DVD to make back its money over time.
Conclusions: Plenty of great action and a very good performance by Joey King. Not a new idea and predictable, but it does what it sets out to do and its better than Olympus Has Fallen.
