I know this is still some months off, but I am determined to get more organised with this series of blogs in 2014. This will be the fourth year I have compiled a blog series surrounding the contest and it I hope it proves to be as popular as it has been in previous years.
As we know, last year’s winners were Denmark with the song “Only Teardrops” and they won the right to host this year’s competition. Can Scandanavia make it a hatrick of victories having won in both 2012 and 2013? The contest will be held in Copenhagen following the successful bid from the city who will stage the contest in the B&W Hallerne which has a capacity of about 10,000. Although this phot doesn’t do it much justice, I have every confidence that it will be transformed by the time May comes around.
With the smaller venue, it would appear that Denmark are continuing the cost cutting on the staging of Eurovision following years of far too much expense for hosting countries. Recently our hosts released the message for the contest, something which happens every year and 2014’s message is #JoinUs. Social media is going to be the order of the day and the medium has really been pushed to the forefront of Eurovision in recent years to allow fans and artists alike to say more.
At the same time, the logo was released along with the message so here it is in all its glory.
37 countries have confirmed their participation in this year’s contest. Poland and Portugal are returning this year with Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Cyprus all pulling out. Turkey have still boycotted the competition and they are still citing differences with the rules of the contest. They still feel that the mixture of televoting and a jury to decide the winner is unfair. Each to their own I guess.
San Marino have yet to make it to the Grand Final of the contest and they are trying for the third year running with female vocalist Valentina Monetta. Personally I think her song last year was very hard done by and deserved a place in the final. Perhaps it will be third time lucky for her this year.
Sporadically, I will post up videos of artists and their songs as they become available, but most songs are picked between February and March which is when the bulk of my series here will be written. I hope you return to see what I think about each song this year and my predictions for qualifiers to the final after each semi final.
