Synopsis: The whole world comes together to build massive robots to combat the huge aliens that have invaded the Earth. Not from space, but from beneath the sea-bed. These creatures are unlike anything the world has ever seen before. Can they be stopped before it’s too late?

Main Cast: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Max Martini, Ron Perlman

The Hype: Billed as one of the biggest movies of the year, the buzz surrounding this was huge, particularly on the social network sites. One of this year’s summer blockbusters costing a massive $190M , it wasn’t as successful as many would have hoped and opinion was split upon its release.

What I Thought: I really liked this. It’s not the kind that I usually go for, but I figured I’d check out what all the fuss was about. It plays like an episode of Power Rangers in all honesty, but with a better cast, amazing effects and better production value. It is like a big budget B-movie much like the old Japanese Godzilla movies, which has its place in film. Like I said, the special effects are amazing and although the cast is small and not big name (with the exception of Elba), they do a decent job with the material they have. Director Guillermo del Toro perhaps took a risk with this one, but I guess the likes of he can get away with it if it doesn’t sell. I would recommend this to action fans and B-movie freaks =)

Conclusions: Great special effects and would probably be even better in 3D, decent B movie story-telling and excellent production value. Just not a huge success. It will probably do much better on DVD to make up its money.
