Synopsis: A bounty hunter with an unusual talent is called upon by his country to help stop a madman from giving the United States and hundred year celebration to forget. Jonah Hex has a past with this lunatic who is hell bent on causing as much suffering and pain to achieve his goal of a Confederate States of America.

Main Cast: Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Michael Fassbender, Aiden Quinn, John Gallagher Jr.

The Hype: Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, this film slipped completely under my radar. It was a big flop at the box office, but I had never even heard of it, not even in passing so I guess if everyone else was in the same boat as me, it’s no wonder no-one went to see it. Normally you at least see a trailer or hear something from a comic book fan along the way. Here – nothing.

What I Thought: With a good cast, despite the fact that it bombed, I found it actually quite entertaining. It’s like a cross between The Crow and Wild Wild West. The revenge story with the western setting which always works quite well – see Unforgiven, The Quick & The Dead. Having seen a few Josh Brolin films in recent months, I think he really is becoming one of my favourites. Fassbender gives his usual great performance and passes off a very decent Irish accent. John Malkovich? well he’s John Malkovich, you don’t expect anything but a great job and as we have seen before, he can do bad guys just as well as the good guys. The action scenes are fast and to the point and the special effects are nicely done. The intro to the character flips between film and cartoon and in this respect is similar to another film I reveiwed a while ago – Bunraku.

Conclusions: Good cast, nice action, decent special effects and not a bad story all things considered. Also, it is not too long at 80 minutes so it doesn’t take too much out of your evening, even if you don’t like it, which in this case I did. There’s a good soundtrack aswell featuring Mastodon!
