If there is one contender for an Oscar in a few months, its The Ides Of March. This is a movie devoted to the subject of dirty politics and how one very talented staffer on a Presidential Nominee campaign gets a crash course in how to play the game of dirty politics and play it well in order to win.

George Clooney is fast becoming pretty well respected in the director’s chair and this film is a very fine example of Clooney’s expertise behind the camera. He actually does pretty much everything on this movie. Director, screenplay writer, producer, and he also stars as a Democratic politician (Mike Morris) running for the nomination for the President Of The United States. As always he puts in a great performance and comes across as a very believable politician.

Also starring in this film are some of the best actors in Hollywood. Ryan Gosling plays Stephen Meyers, a very clever and talented political mind and second in command of the campaign. When he gets himself into a situation regarding their opponents, he finds himself at the crappy end of the stick very quickly. When things are made even more interesting when a pretty young intern has some news, Meyers has to take some drastic action to save his career and the campaign. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei also appear and this film and they all give great weight to the Oscar prediction I am giving this movie.

I think Clooney is definitely in with a chance of Best Director here although I don’t know any of the nominations yet, I think it will be in there for sure. I am a big fan of political drama and the story was very interesting for me. The performances were excellent and gritty and really gave the story life and the characters substance so that you actually care what happens to them as the story progresses.

I give The Ides Of March an excellent 8/10 and I would certainly recommend this movie. Here is the trailer, I hope you enjoy it.
