Front Of The Queue

This week the aim is to tell everyone who you think deserves to be at the top of a “frontman/woman” list. In big bands there is always the leader of the band who is running the show and in my opinion there was non finer than Freddie Mercury.

He always appears to be near the top of the list, but not quite and I think that this is one of the biggest injustices in the music business’ history. The man was not only talented, but was able to control an audience – no matter how big – and make it do anything the hell he wanted.

The best example of this was of course at Live Aid in 1985. Queen were supposed be on stage for 15 minutes just like any of the other acts appearing that day. Their set overran by 6 minutes and has since been acknowledged by many music critics as the best performance at the concert. I would say that it was one of Queen’s finest ever live performances in their whole career.

There are many moments to pick from regarding the stage prowess from this quiet and shy man off the stage. Freddie Mercury on stage was like a part he played in a movie and had he actually been in a movie playing this part, there is no doubt he would have won multiple Oscar’s. The man was a great singer, a talented writer and artist, but most of all, he was the ultimate showman and did everything to excess. Sadly of course that would eventually cost him his life, but the music and pictures we have of his time on this Earth are truly magical and every music fan should experience in their lifetimes.

Everyone has seen the Live Aid performance by Queen, so I will leave you will a different moment that always sticks in my mind when we talk about Freddie. “Somebody To Love” at the Milton Keynes Bowl in 1982. Enjoy and share your thoughts on favourite frontmen in the comments box below. Thanks for reading.
